A Government Shut Down Will Harm Private Businesses Nationwide

with one comment

With the federal government shutdown set to occur tonight if a deal isn’t made, private businesses are nervous and worried about their ability to do business and earn revenues. Some may have to lay off or furlough their workers if a shut down lasts for more than just a weekend or a couple of days.

The New York Times Business Section reports:

Among the people anxiously waiting to hear if Congress can reach a budget deal are front desk clerks at the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park, manufacturing executives whose companies supply goods to federal agencies, bank loan officers who make mortgages guaranteed by the Federal Housing Administration and Wall Street analysts who depend on a steady flow of government data.

There’s hardly any industry in the U.S. that is not affected in some way by federal government services, from the national weather service that gives us our daily weather reports to ensuring that the markets have accurate guidance and information.

Anyone who thinks a shut down is a good idea fails to understand how integral the federal government is to most businesses.

  1. Not surprisingly, it’s the small guy who takes the brunt of the hit on things like this.
