Five…count ’em…5 GOP governors say they will refuse Stim funds
Now, whether they will or not is another matter. They may be just playing to the base.
However, if the four southern and the Alaskan governors refuse the funds, that’s fine with me. I even go so far as to hope their legislatures refuse to overturn their decision. It means less outlay – or less money spent, reducing the cost of the Stimulus Bill.
I admit, though, I have an ulterior motive: refusing the funds will put each of these states in even worse fiscal difficulties which will cause the citizens of those states to get really angry. When the citizenry gets really angry, the Republican governors – and their cohorts – will get voted out of office.
So much for “presidential” plans!
Now, back to reality. Will the Stimulus funds be refused? Not by a long shot. GOP governors may posture and play to the base and hope to get even more media exposure for their principled stand, but in the long run they’re politicians. They understand the rubber hits the road in their states: states are bleeding money as more and more people lose their jobs, more and more people need state services, and more and more people lose their homes.
These governors may be publically playing to the crowd, but I’d bet that behind the scenes their counting the dollars coming to their states.
