CA State Republican opposition to budget could presage huge Democratic win in next election.
California purportedly is the world’s 8th largest economy…and it’s going bust. As a Californian, I’m waiting to see what happens when CA runs out of money because Republican State Senators refuse to sign onto a budget deal that raises some taxes.
I wonder how Californians will like having State offices shut down, schools close, local police and firemen laid off…oh, just about everything the State provides come to a roaring halt. I’m sure the bad guys will love it – expect a sudden increase in crime! Oh, and just think about all the extra time you’ll get to spend with your children or not. They may have to shuttle to a school further away as districts consolidate to save money.
Regardless, the consequences will be fascinating for the nation to watch because California’s budget battle mimics the national battle. If the Republican “no tax increases whatsoever” holds, the State will go bust in a month or less. No money for anything. The nation will get to see the results of that Republican ideological position.
As a student of history, I’m fascinated. I suspect that if the Republicans hold firm and the entire State government does shut down completely, the Californian Republican party will implode when the citizenry fails to get any of the services they’ve come to expect, from trains to cops to firemen to social services. It will provide a huge win for the Democrats in the next election, not only in California but possibly across the country.
